STAGE 1

Objective

  • Rehabilitate the North (Westbound) Side of the Bridge from January 2019 to late 2019.

Traffic Impact

  • One lane each direction
  • Barrier protected multi-use lane on the eastbound side

Work Items

  • Repair deteriorated areas of the existing westbound concrete deck
  • Replace the westbound pavement’s expansion joints
  • Repave the westbound deck with a pavement overlay
  • Repair deteriorated steel components of the superstructure
  • Repair substructure components (concrete abutments, piers, and pier caps)
  • Replacing the bridge’s drainage system on the westbound side
  • Complete traffic signal and related improvements along Grays Ferry Avenue from South 48th Street to 34th Street
  • Replace highway lighting within the project limits

Objective

  • Rehabilitate the south (eastbound) side of the bridge from early 2020 to September 2020.

Traffic Impacts

  • One lane each direction
  • Sidewalk on the westbound side
  • Dedicated Bicycle Lane on the westbound side

Work Items

  • Repair deteriorated areas of the existing eastbound concrete deck
  • Replace the eastbound pavement’s expansion joints
  • Repave the eastbound deck with a pavement overlay
  • Repair deteriorated steel components of the superstructure
  • Repair substructure components (concrete abutments, piers, and pier caps)
  • Replace the bridge’s drainage system on the eastbound side
  • Construct a new retaining wall on the southeast side of the bridge
  • Complete traffic signal and related improvements along Grays Ferry Avenue from South 48th Street to 34th Street
  • Replace highway lighting within the project limits

Stage 2 construction on the south (eastbound) side of the bridge: A dedicated bicycle lane and sidewalk will allow pedestrians and cyclists to cross the bridge during construction.

STAGE 3

Objective

  • Install traffic signals and signs, improve the trail access adjacent to the eastbound side of the bridge, install conduit for fiber optic lines on Grays Ferry Avenue, and mill and repave Grays Ferry Avenue on the east and west approaches to the bridge from September 2020 to November 2020.

Traffic Impacts

  • Two lanes each direction during peak travel times
  • Periodic, off-peak lane closures 34th Street to Paschall Avenue
  • Protected Sidewalk westbound
  • Dedicated bicycle lane westbound
  • Barrier protected multi-use lane eastbound

Stage 3 Work Items

  • Install temporary traffic control to open lanes on the bridge to traffic
  • Complete traffic signal and related improvements along Grays Ferry Avenue from South 48th Street to 34th Street
  • Install all new signing
  • Landscape and install sprinklers on the trailhead access path
  • Install a concrete median barrier on the bridge
  • Mill and repave east and west bridge approaches
  • Paint final pavement markings
